Julian of Norwich verloor tijdens de pest pandemie in de 14e eeuw op jonge leeftijd haar man en kind. Toen werd ze zelf ook erg ziek. Op haar ziekbed kreeg ze een aantal mystieke ervaringen die haar zeer aangrepen. Julian werd beter en besloot zichzelf naast de kerk in te metselen, om zo de rest van haar leven als stedelijke kluizenaar haar mystieke ervaringen te overdenken. Haar boek ‘Revelations of Divine Love’ is het resultaat van 80 jaar kluizenaarschap.
Door de verschrikkingen van de pest kreeg het Europese denken over de relatie met de natuur iets achterdochtigs. Het werd een kwaad dat onder controle en op afstand moest worden gehouden. De kerk zocht een uitleg voor deze gebeurtenissen in verhalen over schuld en veroordeling. Met haar boek ‘Revelations of Divine Love’ laat Julian of Norwich een andere houding zien: een houding van liefde en vertrouwen op Gods aanwezigheid in zijn schepping.
